As we approach the conclusion of 2024, the Rajarata University of Sri Lanka (RUSL) proudly convenes its fourth annual Research Awards Ceremony to honour scholars whose dedication to research and innovation has significantly contributed to the advancement of knowledge and the elevation of the university’s academic standing, both nationally and internationally.
In higher education, rigorous academic inquiry and pioneering research serve as twin pillars of intellectual and institutional progress. Their integration is pivotal in shaping university rankings and fostering a culture of critical thinking and discovery. As an institution committed to cultivating the ‘philosophy of research’, RUSL remains steadfast in its mission to nurture the next generation of scholars, ensuring that our students, the primary stakeholders in this endeavour, are equipped with the intellectual curiosity and analytical acumen necessary to make meaningful contributions to society.
Sustaining excellence in research necessitates a collective commitment, where each participant derives fulfilment from their scholarly pursuits. Recognizing and celebrating the achievements of our distinguished researchers is both a tribute to their individual contributions and an acknowledgement of their role in enhancing RUSL’sacademic reputation.

It is with great pleasure that I extend my heartfelt congratulations on the successful organization of the 4th Research Excellence Awards Ceremony, an event dedicated to recognizing and celebrating the outstanding contributions of researchers and inventors who have elevated the reputation of Rajarata University of Sri Lanka (RUSL) both locally and internationally.

In a world that is constantly changing, it is the
work of our researchers that holds the key to unlocking new opportunities and advancing our shared goals. The 4th Research Excellence Awards Ceremony exemplifies this commitment, and I take great pride in extending my warmest congratulations to this year’s award winners for their remarkable achievements.

It is through research that we address challenges in health, technology, education, the environment, and beyond. In recent years, the academic staff of Rajarata University of Sri Lanka (RUSL) has made significant contributions to research, publishing numerous papers in reputable academic journals. Notably, the number of high-quality journals published has shown a steady increase. From 2020 to 2024, RUSL researchers published over 634 Scopus-indexed papers, reflecting the university’s growing research impact. However, the motivation and recognition extended to academics remain insufficient.
The RUSL Research Excellence Awards aim to acknowledge, appreciate, and encourage outstanding academic staff members who excel in research, innovation, and scholarly contributions. Research plays a critical role in the university system, driving knowledge creation and innovation, which are key factors in both national and international university rankings. Over the past few years, RUSL has emerged as a leading university in Sri Lanka, demonstrating remarkable progress in research output, international collaborations, and citation impact. Based on the SCImago Ranking 2024,
RUSL is ranked first among Sri Lankan universities, a significant achievement that underscores the university’s commitment to research excellence. Maintaining this reputation and striving for even greater accomplishments in the future remains a top priority.
The selection of award recipients was conducted through a rigorous, well-structured, and transparent evaluation process, ensuring fairness across all six faculties. All conflicts of interest were duly declared and taken into consideration. For this year’s awards, we received over 182 applications for different award categories from 62 researchers, highlighting the enthusiasm and dedication of our academic community.
I extend my heartfelt congratulations to all the winners of the RUSL Research Excellence Awards 2024. I also express my sincere appreciation to the Research Awards Committee for their dedication and hard work in organizing this prestigious event.
